Navarra, a benchmark territory in AI\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Regional Minister for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation, Juan Cruz\u00a0Cigudosa, this morning presented the Navarra Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (NAIR Center), launched with the aim of making the Chartered Community a benchmark territory in this field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Specialised\u00a0in Artificial Intelligence, NAIR Center sits between the applied research carried out by existing research and technology\u00a0centres\u00a0and the basic research conducted by universities. The new\u00a0centre\u00a0is likewise aligned with business needs thanks to its link with Navarra\u2019s Digital Innovation Hub (IRIS). It will be\u00a0located\u00a0alongside IRIS in the El Sario building at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During his address, Minister\u00a0Cigudosa\u00a0underlined the importance of this new\u00a0centre\u00a0as part of the regional government\u2019s commitment to Artificial Intelligence. \u201cThe aim,\u201d he\u00a0stated, \u201cis to research algorithms and offer AI-based technological solutions at both local and global level.\u201d The Minister also highlighted public\u2013private collaboration as key to the successful development of this project, as well as the need to attract talent in this field\u00a0in order to\u00a0\u201cconsolidate Navarra as a high-quality hub in the sphere of Artificial Intelligence\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For his part, NAIR Center\u2019s Managing Director, Gorka Garc\u00eda,\u00a0emphasised\u00a0the fundamental role of the\u00a0centre\u00a0as a one-stop shop for Artificial Intelligence in Navarra, complementing and reinforcing existing areas of expertise within regional entities and companies. \u201cCollaboration agreements are being\u00a0formalised\u00a0with several\u00a0entities\u00a0and we are taking part as a partner in different project calls,\u201d he noted.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also taking part in the presentation were the Director-General for Universities, Ana\u00a0Burusco, and NAIR Center\u2019s Scientific Director, Humberto\u00a0Bustince.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Main lines of research\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Navarra Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (NAIR Center) will focus on specific areas of research through teams made up of internationally renowned researchers alongside younger scientists. In this regard, the Centre\u2019s Scientific Director, Humberto\u00a0Bustince, outlined three major areas of research currently under way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1) Computational neuroscience.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The goal is to develop processes capable of using Artificial Intelligence to understand the principles governing the development, structure,\u00a0physiology\u00a0and cognitive abilities of the nervous system. Building on this knowledge, the aim is to apply artificial techniques and procedures.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Disruptive Artificial Intelligence.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This line\u00a0seeks\u00a0to address specific problems with a high potential to trigger paradigm-shifting scientific and economic change. For example, work is being done on designing\u00a0personalised\u00a0proteins for nutrition and on adaptive radiotherapy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Applied basic research.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This focuses on developing new methods to improve and make more efficient the fusion of information in the various processes involved in AI techniques and methods. In addition, this area explores techniques that enable machines to learn autonomously and to develop solutions to different problems\u00a0on the basis of\u00a0available information and data, using so-called deep-learning techniques.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steps taken up to its creation\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In June 2020, the Parliament of Navarra urged the creation of a Research Centre in Artificial Intelligence. The Government of Navarra assigned this mandate to the Department for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation\u2014specifically to the Directorate-General for Universities\u2014given the crucial role that universities play in this sphere.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past year, the Government of Navarra has moved forward with the creation of the\u00a0centre,\u00a0establishing\u00a0its governance and business\u00a0model\u00a0and defining strategic relationships. Through a selection process, the Department for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation appointed industrial engineer Gorka Garc\u00eda as Managing Director of the\u00a0centre\u00a0and Professor Humberto\u00a0Bustince\u2014Chair of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA)\u2014as Scientific Director.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the start of 2023, the\u00a0centre\u00a0was formally founded, with the Government of Navarra represented on its Board of Trustees, and it has been accredited as a distinctive entity within the Navarra R&D&I System (SINAI). Thanks to the joint work of these actors, knowledge in the field of Artificial Intelligence will be transferred and will\u00a0benefit\u00a0the public at large.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
