NAIR Center brings Artificial Intelligence to older people in the Santa María la Real neighbourhood

Pamplona, 24 April 2026. Last Thursday, 23 April, NAIR Center held a workshop for members of the Neighbours and Traders’ Association of the Santa María la Real neighbourhood, with the aim of promoting a more accessible and user-friendly approach to Artificial Intelligence among older people. The session, entitled AI for Older People: Your New Ally in Everyday Life, was attended by 35 people aged between 62 and 84 (80% women and 20% men), who gained a practical understanding of the possibilities offered by these tools and shared their concerns about using them.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has already begun to become part of older people’s daily lives, offering new opportunities to communicate, access useful information and improve their wellbeing. However, access to these technologies remains unequal. The digital divide, lack of support and certain technological barriers continue to prevent many older people from discovering and making the most of these tools in their everyday lives.

In response to this challenge, the session first explained, in accessible terms, what AI is and how it can be integrated into everyday life. During the workshop, participants learnt how to use tools such as ChatGPT to write messages, organise plans, search for useful information, resolve questions about technology and the home, and find reading and leisure recommendations. Examples of queries related to wellbeing and healthy habits were also presented, while emphasising that these tools should never replace advice or care provided by healthcare professionals.

The session also highlighted a key issue: the limitations of Artificial Intelligence. Through practical examples, participants learnt that these tools can sometimes generate incorrect or inaccurate answers, making it essential to verify information before making decisions, particularly on sensitive matters.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion in which participants were able to raise their questions and concerns. Among the topics discussed, there was particular interest in understanding how these tools work, as well as concern about sharing personal data, one of the main issues identified during the session.

Second edition of the workshop

Following the success of the first AI for Older People workshop, a second edition was held on 10 June with residents from the neighbourhood, as well as people from other areas of Pamplona who also joined the initiative.

Once again, the workshop brought Artificial Intelligence closer to participants’ everyday lives by introducing tools such as ChatGPT and sharing practical recommendations on their use, potential risks and benefits.

The session also provided an opportunity to answer participants’ questions and concerns, confirming the growing interest among older people in understanding the potential of these technologies while promoting their responsible and safe use.
