Artificial intelligence and technology are playing a crucial role in Navarra’s economic transformation. From the automotive industry to agriculture and health, these advances are driving the region’s efficiency, innovation and competitiveness. A recent Government of Navarra report estimates that the digitalisation of productive sectors could increase regional GDP by 10% over the next decade, underlining the importance of these developments.
In the automotive industry, the integration of AI systems makes it possible to optimise the production chain, implement predictive maintenance and improve product quality.
In agriculture, the use of drones, smart sensors and big-data analytics enables farmers to monitor their crops with unprecedented precision, optimising the use of resources and increasing yields by up to 15%. These innovations not only improve profitability but also promote more sustainable farming practices.
In health, AI is revolutionising the diagnosis and treatment of disease. A study by the University of Navarra has shown that the use of AI in oncology can increase diagnostic accuracy by up to 30%, significantly reducing costs and improving clinical outcomes.
This technological transformation is not only changing Navarra’s economy; it is also improving citizens’ quality of life, creating new job opportunities and promoting sustainable growth. Since 2019, the region has created more than 5,000 jobs in technology sectors, representing a 12% increase in tech employment.
However, the road to digital transformation is not without challenges. Ongoing training and workforce adaptation are crucial to ensure that workers can meet the demands of an increasingly technology-intensive economy.
Training initiatives and reskilling programmes are essential to maintain competitiveness. The Government of Navarra has recently launched a digital-skills training programme that has benefited more than 3,000 workers, preparing them for the new roles emerging in the technology sector.
Collaboration between the public and private sectors, together with a clear innovation strategy, will be key for Navarra to maintain its leadership in the technological sphere.
Navarra Technology Park, for example, is home to more than 100 technology companies and has attracted investment exceeding €50 million over the last five years.
Foreign investment is also on the rise, with international companies establishing research and development centres in Navarra. This not only diversifies the economy but also drives knowledge and technology transfer, benefiting local firms. In 2023, Navarra received more than €200 million in foreign investment earmarked for technology projects, consolidating its position as an innovation hub in Europe.
Intelligence Centre
With the aim of continuing to move forward and maintain technological leadership, the Government of Navarra has promoted NAIR Center, a research centre dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) that has experienced notable growth since its inauguration a year ago. The centre already has 11 projects under way, 5 collaboration agreements and a portfolio of 9 services aimed at institutions, companies and professionals.
NAIR Center not only promotes innovation and business growth; it has also been integrated into Navarra’s Digital Innovation Hub as coordinator of the AI area, strengthening its position as a leading centre in this field. Its accreditation as a distinctive entity within the Navarra R&D&I System (SINAI) provides a focus on driving technological development in the region.
The development and drive of NAIR Center represent a fundamental step forward for AI in Navarra, strengthening its position thanks to the backing of the regional government, a consolidated team and a clear strategic vision. The mission of NAIR Center is to promote and coordinate AI research and application for the benefit of society as a whole. Its strategic plan focuses on four main research areas: intelligent data analysis, machine learning, disruptive AI and its impact on society, and explainable AI.
Collaboration between the public and private sectors has been established as a fundamental pillar in NAIR Center’s strategy. The signing of collaboration agreements, such as the one reached with the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), has enabled renowned researchers to work closely with the centre’s staff on high-impact projects. This synergy is vital to maintaining the dynamism and relevance of technological progress in Navarra, ensuring that the region remains at the forefront of innovation and development in the field of artificial intelligence.
