Ander Goñi Medrano, a predoctoral researcher at NAIR Center supported by a Fundación Caja Navarra scholarship, is currently undertaking a research stay at Ghent University (Belgium). This international experience will enable him to advance his doctoral thesis on new data-fusion methods applied to machine learning, a key line of work for optimising the quality, integration and exploitation of information in artificial intelligence.

During his stay, Ander is working with Professor Bernard De Baets, Head of the Department of Data Analysis and Mathematical Modelling in the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, and leader of the Knowledge-based Systems research unit KERMIT at Ghent University. De Baets, a mathematician, computer scientist and knowledge engineer, is internationally recognised for his research in fuzzy logic, predictive and spatio-temporal modelling, and for innovative applications in the biological sciences. He is the author of more than 550 scientific articles and an editor of leading journals such as Fuzzy Sets and Systems.

Thanks to Fundación Caja Navarra’s predoctoral scholarship, Ander—who holds a degree in Mathematics and a master’s in Advanced Mathematics—is developing his thesis at NAIR Center within the area of intelligent data analysis and fusion, one of the centre’s strategic lines for driving new artificial-intelligence solutions applicable in fields such as precision medicine, biotechnology and cyber security.

This support responds to the agreement reached between NAIR Center and Fundación Caja Rural in 2023, through which Fundación Caja Navarra reinforces its commitment to research and knowledge. One of Fundación Caja Navarra’s objectives is to respond to the new challenges that society faces and, without doubt, artificial intelligence and its possible applications are an issue that affects us.

This collaboration strengthens NAIR Center’s commitment to fostering young talent and international connections, consolidating Navarra as a benchmark region for research and technological innovation.

About NAIR Center

NAIR Center, the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence of Navarra, is a not-for-profit organisation focused on promoting advanced research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data engineering. Founded in 2022 through the Department for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation of the Government of Navarra, NAIR Center has positioned itself as a leader in applying Artificial Intelligence for the benefit of society and industry, committed to excellence in research and to developing practical solutions to contemporary challenges using advanced technologies. Its main objectives include promoting high-quality research in AI and data technology, disseminating knowledge to companies and society, fostering the use of AI in the Sistema Navarro de I+D+i (SINAI) and in regional companies to drive competitiveness, supporting academic and applied AI research, encouraging the creation of high-value jobs and contributing to the overall development of R&D&I by promoting new technology companies and research centres in Navarra and neighbouring regions.
