Fundación Caja Navarra collaborates with NAIR Center on research into computational neuroscience and data and information fusion.
Fundación Caja Navarra is reinforcing its commitment to research and knowledge through collaboration with NAIR Center, Navarra’s Artificial Intelligence Research Centre. One of Fundación Caja Navarra’s objectives is to respond to the new challenges facing society and, without doubt, artificial intelligence and its possible applications are an issue that affects us all.
Accordingly, it will collaborate with NAIR Center—Navarra’s leading organisation in this field—by contributing €50,000 during the 2023–24 academic year to fund two pre-doctoral research grants on computational neuroscience and on data and information fusion, respectively. The first doctoral thesis falls within NAIR Center’s research line in computational neuroscience and seeks to delve deeper into the analysis—using intelligent techniques—of electroencephalogram signals and other types of signal.
The second doctoral thesis lies within the Centre’s basic research into data and information fusion. It will focus on developing new fusion mechanisms applicable to different artificial-intelligence algorithms in order to improve their interpretability and explainability—that is, understanding why a given intelligent algorithm provides the answer it provides in a particular case. This is one of the most relevant challenges in current AI. The full amount will be allocated to the remuneration of the two people who carry out these investigations.
The duration of these research projects is four years, and both researchers must submit their respective theses and will thereby obtain their doctorates. At the end of each year, follow-up meetings will be held to review progress in both areas.
NAIR Center works to promote and drive excellence in basic and applied research in the fields of artificial intelligence and data engineering that are of interest to Navarrese society and to international scientific development. It likewise promotes the dissemination of Artificial Intelligence in Navarra, encouraging the use of AI among the delivery agents of the Sistema Navarro de Innovación (SINAI – Navarra Innovation System) and in Navarrese businesses, thereby helping to increase their competitiveness.
It also supports basic research conducted by universities and applied research carried out by existing research centres and technology centres in the field of artificial intelligence. In addition, it works to promote high-value-added employment and the attraction of talent to Navarra in the fields of artificial intelligence and data engineering. And it contributes to the general promotion of R&D&I, as well as to the establishment in Navarra of new technology-based companies and of research centres, technology centres and similar entities.
